A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of an animal. The chip, about the size of a large grain of rice, uses passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, and is also known as a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag. Standard pet microchips are typically 11-13 mm long (approximately 1⁄2 inch) and 2 mm in diameter.
Externally attached microchips such as RFID ear tags are commonly used to identify farm and ranch animals, with the exception of horses. Some external microchips can be read with the same scanner used with implanted chips.
Animal shelters, animal control officers and veterinarians routinely look for microchips to return lost pets quickly to their owners, avoiding expenses for housing, food, medical care, outplacing and euthanasia. Many shelters place chips in all outplaced animals.
Microchips are also used by kennels, breeders, brokers, trainers, registries, rescue groups, humane societies, clinics, farms, stables, animal clubs and associations, researchers, and pet stores.
This tag is encapsulated within a highly durable case which makes it useful for a range of applications from implanting into pets to laundry management.
The low frequency glass RFID tag is amply insensitive to read interference caused by liquids and metals and is resistant to immersion in salt water, alcohol, oil, 10% HCL and ammonia. How is a Microchip Injected?
1.Prepare the site for an injection by wiping with alcohol. To prevent stinging, allow thirty seconds for alcohol to dry.
2.Form a "tent" of skin by pulling the skin tissue upwards above the injection site.
3.Insert the needle at the base of the "tent". Make sure the sloped part of the needle, which is called the bevel, is facing up. Enter at a 45 degree angle (approximately) from the surface of the back.
4.Enter needle fully, until the hub comes into contact with the skin. For small animals: Depending on the breed, it may not be necessary to insert the needle this far, but you must get the entire bevel into the pup or kitten.
5.Slowly depress syringe plunger. Do not begin to withdraw the syringe until the plunger is totally depressed, allowing the plunger rod to clear the chip from the needle.
6.Apply pressure to the injection site using your thumb or finger as you withdraw the needle. Gently massage the area close to the injection site.
7.Scan the implanted microchip and record the microchip number on the pet's health record.
