Achieving 10-Year Lifetime ESL
Providing multi-year lifetime is one of the most challenging areas in ESL. How do you maximize the life of a battery-powered ESL to help retailers avoid replacements and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO)? To achieve a 5-year lifespan for an ESL based on CR2032-CR2450 or 10 cells, current budgets are typically less than 10uA. This budget needs to cover E-Ink screen updates, wireless communications, and other features such as blinking LEDs.
Silicon Labs FG22 or BG22 SoCs meet these requirements because they have industry-leading low power radios at 3.6 mA TX and 2.5 mA RX, as well as ultra-low power (0.17 uA-1.8 uA) sleep modes. In addition, the FG22 and BG22 have an RFSENSE wake-up radio feature that keeps the device in the lowest power sleep mode (approximately 170 nA) until it is awakened by a dedicated radio signal. This helps preserve battery life between ESL manufacturing and deployment, and prevents the ESL radio from transmitting during air transport.
